Mario Alberto Chacón
is originally from the East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights,
with roots in El Paso, Texas and the Sierras of Chihuahua. Chacón
views the world through the ironic prism of an urban Chicano
street urchin, indigenous cultural warrior, and educator. Steeped
in a profound love for his family, and heritage, and informed
by political activism and traditional indigenous ceremony, Chacón
strives to weave a balance of active decolonization, native
spirituality, and street wisdom into his artistic endeavors.
Without question a powerfully humorous strand runs through
the tapestry of Chacón’s work -- at once tickling
the senses while grasping at the conscience of the viewer.
His work vibrates equally with humor and pain as it fluidly
navigates from the literal to the symbolic depiction of the
harsher side of the human condition.
Chacón completed his undergraduate work in History
at U.C.L.A. and CSULA, and received a M.S. in Education at
San Diego State University. Chacón has been a member
of the San Diego community for over 24 years and currently
serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at San Diego City College.
